They have been given equality with men in shaping their future and sharing responsibilities for themselves, their family and their country. Reporting of this violence is also extremely low due to lack of access to adequate communication – accommodations like an interpreter are rarely available in these scenarios. Ultrasound scanning constitutes a major leap forward in providing for the care of mother and baby, and with scanners becoming portable, these advantages have spread to rural populations. However, ultrasound scans often reveal the sex of the baby, allowing pregnant women to decide to abort female foetuses and try again later for a male child. This practice is usually considered the main reason for the change in the ratio of male to female children being born.
Despite these negative facets, the Republic of India has seen women participate and sometimes excel in all fields of art, science and culture. Chewing tobacco and use of tapkir/snuff were the other commonly used forms of SLT in most of the areas surveyed in the present study. Betel quid chewing is a common habit among both men and women in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The demographic and health survey reported the use of chewing tobacco common in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Cambodia.
In the present study, the prevalence of masheri use was 12.9%, chewing tobacco was 3.81%, betel leaves with or without tobacco was 2.94%, and tapkir/snuff was 0.99% among the total female population. Masheri, application of burned tobacco to clean the teeth, was the most common form of tobacco used by women in the present survey. This form of tobacco use is typically more common in the state of Maharashtra.

On October 10, 2020, two bills were signed into law to help address the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women in the United States. The bills, which were presented to the President on September 30, 2020, follow years of advocacy by indigenous women, tribes, and Native organizations calling for firm action to combat this human rights issue.
